This is my entry to the Regular Show t-shirt contest sponsored by Threadless. Regular Show is one of my favorites, and I’ve seen every episode (so far). Its absurd hilarity has brought a smile to my face countless times and is one of the things that sparks in me a desire to keep making art, and doing an homage piece is both humbling and invigorating. To me, Regular Show represents something original perpetuating a format that is (more often than not) by-the-numbers, which is no easy feat, and it inspires me to strive for a unique view in a run-of-the-mill, bogged-down wasteland of entertainment. I doubt those things can be seen in this piece, but it was the backing behind it. I hope to see the gloriously off-the-wall Regular Show continue for many, many more years to come.

Do you remember SOPA? The bill that would give government the right to spy on internet activity without warrant, and let them censor “unwanted” sites by blocking people’s access to them?

Meet its twin. But this time it’s all the more frightening; the House has passed it despite Obama’s threats to veto. And by an alarmingly large margin, at that. CISPA threatens the US constitution’s guarantees of due privacy and free speech, permitting any government agency to access and transfer of vast amounts of data- from internet records to even the content of personal e-mails, and all without obtaining a warrant.

What’s even more disgusting than this bill actually making through the House is some of the arguments used to help it’s passage, and comments made by one of the bill’s biggest supporters admitting the bill helps big business while insulting opposers (whose is also speculated to have personal reasons for wanting CISPA made into law).

This threatens every element of your online presence. From personal emails to general activity, any government agency will have the ability to go fishing without consequence.

Please, PLEASE, sign the following petitions. You don’t even have to be a US citizen to sign most of them or act against CISPA, and please keep in mind that if this shit flies in America, who knows what country might use its example to do it, too.

Exactly.

Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.

Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circle’s holes, to drill a single triangle space into the wall.

Now imagine that the circle — who previously supported the triangle’s efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality — comes along and sees the construction project. But instead of being happy, they get angry.

“Well, I won’t be able to fit through your hole!!!!” the circle cries.

“I helped you get the drill!!!!” the circle shrieks.

“Make it fit me too!!!!” the circle demands.

The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together, stare at the circle in confusion.

“You have all the holes you need,” the triangles explain. “This is for us. You don’t need to fit through our hole, too.”

“YOU’RE BEING UNEQUAL AND HURTING MY FEELINGS!” the circle wails. “I DON’T SUPPORT YOUR HOLE IF IT DOESN’T FIT ME TOO. GIVE ME MY DRILL BACK.”

“It’s not your drill, it’s our drill. You helped us get it, because you said you cared.”

“I ONLY CARED WHEN I THOUGHT YOU’D MAKE A HOLE EVERYONE COULD FIT THROUGH. YOU’RE PERPETUATING INEQUALITY!!!”

“Why is it up to us, the small group that has never been able to fit through the wall at all, to make a hole everyone can use? Why isn’t it up to you, the people who have been able to cross back and forth at will for years? We just want to see the other side; why are you yelling at us?”

“I DIDN’T ASK TO BE BORN A CIRCLE, OMG. I’VE HAD TO WORK HARD ALL MY LIFE TOO. YOU’RE JUST BEING BIGOTED AGAINST ME BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I CAN’T CONTROL, JUST LIKE EVERYONE IS AGAINST YOU.”

I have been body conscious my whole life, and have suffered with the resulting repercussions. It’s never fun being uncomfortable in your own skin, so I wanted to highlight the issue of body-love with this one. It takes a lot of courage to love, first, yourself, despite what everyone considers ‘normal’ or ‘acceptable’, and I admit: I’m not quite there yet. But I’m learning (thanks to some amazing people in my life), and for me, that’s a huge step. I know this design won’t solve the problem of body-image consciousness, but if it can change at least one person’s outlook of themselves, I’ll be overjoyed, because, whether you think so or not, you are beautiful.

This is a long-in-the-works collaboration with another fellow Threadless-er, soloyo (aka Nestor Gomez). We met at the 2011 Threadless Meetup, and, after a keynote presentation that highlighted ‘creative block’, he came to me with this concept. It went through many stages, and it’s taken forever for me to find the inspiration to finish it, but, if you think about it, it fits. Besides, to really convey how a ‘creative block’ can be, this of all pieces was surely not one to rush anyway. Thanks again for waiting, Nestor.
